APEX DYNAMICS IV CASE STUDY: University of Eindhoven completes its race special – an autonomous formula, with our gearboxes on duty!

30.5.2019 | The racing special URE14 will be ready soon! In addition to high power and pure electric power, it is also a completely autonomous car. In this article, team members describe and reveal some of the technologies that have been used to build a special, and describe the next steps the team will take in the coming weeks.

The most important component of the special

The special monocoque, which is characterized by its extreme resistance, is made entirely of carbon fiber. This technology is also used for the construction of the fastest racing specials and supersport cars of world-renowned brands, especially based on the achieved carbon fiber properties. The monocoque also forms part of the special chassis itself.

The safety of the rider is always the highest priority. Everything is tailor-made and there is no room for error, as even the slightest imperfection of the cockpit could have fatal consequences for the driver in the event of an accident.

Just-In-Time is the key

Timing must be flawless – if the cockpit is ready to be fitted, then the other components should also be ready for installation. The most difficult task is logistic and production timing. The racing special consists of hundreds of custom parts – from suspension of wheels, engine, brake system or wiring. However, each component requires different manufacturing processes and the associated lengths of production. However, all parts are awaiting delivery for final assembly, and everything is assembled together.

More than an electric ride: an autonomous race car

Not only is the new formula powered by pure electricity, it also has the function of autonomous control, almost without driver intervention. For this year, they will take part not only in electric racing competitions, but also in companies that relate to autonomous driving.

The special show will take place on June 12, 2019, which we will be present at. Formula testing will take place at the World Championship in Assen. URE attends the complete e-Formula Championship in the Netherlands, completes selected companies in Germany and Italy.

Last year we saw a beautiful electric car URE13. This year a brand new racing car URE14 will be held, which can be controlled both autonomously and electrically. The students have taken this extra challenge and this year they will also take part in separate racing competitions.
